Who would be the audience for your media project?


Before doing any research into my target audience, I originally thought that my target audience would be males between the ages of 18-40. However after doing research in to the this I now believe the correct target audience my film is aimed at is actually both male and females around the age of 20. The reason for me changing my mind on this is because of the answers I received on a survey I recently done. In this survey I asked six simple questions, each with multiple choice answers.

The first question I asked was simple 'Are you male of female?', I asked this question so I could find out if my film was gender specific when asking questions later on in the survey. The results from this question were 15 male and 15 female, this is because I asked an equal number of each gender in order to try and get the most accurate results possible from my survey.

The second question I then asked was 'Which category below includes your age?', the options for this included '17 or younger', '18-20', '21-29', '30-39', '40-49', '50-59' and '60 or older'. From the 30 people I asked there were 4 people for each of the categories except '18-20' which had 6 people in it. From this question I would be able to work out what age group my film is best suited for, I would be able to work this out by asking questions later on in the survey and then relate back to their age once completed.

The third question in my survey was 'Do you like my AS media film opening?' and the options for this were simply just 'Yes' or 'No'. The results from this were that 18 people said 'Yes' whereas 12 said 'No'. By relating this back to the age group question asked earlier I can see that 13 of the 18 people that said they enjoyed the film were in the first 3 age categories, which ranged them from 17-29. While the 12 people who didn't like the film were in the other end of the categories, mostly in the ages 50+. I also related this back to the gender question which I asked first, and found out that of the 18 people who said they enjoyed the film, 10 were male, and 8 were female. From this information I can see that the main people who enjoyed my film were between the ages of 17-29 and their gender wasn't overly significant.

The fourth question I asked was 'In your opinion, who is the film best suited for?', the options I gave were 'Children (5-12)', 'Teenagers (13-17)', 'Young adults (18-25)', 'Adults (26-40)' and 'Mature adults (40+)'. The answers I got from this also backed up the answers from previous questions, saying that the film would be best suited for people around their twenties. The results for this question from the 30 people I asked, 27 of them said it would be best suited for 'Young adults' while 5 people said 'Teenagers'. These results show this film could be very age specific, and the age group is not that wide.

The penultimate question on the survey was 'If this film was in the cinema, would you pay to go and watch it?' with the answers being 'Yes', 'No' and 'Maybe'. The results from this question actually surprised me, considering 12 people said they didn't like the film, and 18 who did, 10 of the 30 said they would pay to go watch it and 5 people answered 'maybe' meaning it left 15 people who answered 'No'. I found this quite good, as if 1 in every 3 people I asked said they would pay to go and watch the film it could make it a big success. Once again the results from this question backed up previous questions as the 10 who said they would pay to go watch it were all from ages 17-29.


The sixth and final question which I asked was 'Are you White, Black or African-American, American Indian or Alaskan Native, Asian, Native Hawaiian or other Pacific islander, or some other race?', the multiple choices I gave them were 'White', 'Black or African-American', 'Asian' and 'Other'. I asked this  question in order to find out if my film was specific to a certain ethnicity. The majority of the people I asked were white, with 28 of the 30 asked being so. While only 2 people were 'black or African-American'. With this in mind, the 2 'Black or African-American' both said they wouldn't go and see the film, however I do not think this would be fair to use and say that my film is gender specific due to there not being a big enough sample size, and the vast majority of people answering being 'White'.
